Justice Gita Mittal was appointed Chairperson of Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) in January 2021 after the tenure of Justice Vikramajit Sen ended. An alumnus of Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Justice Mittal has the unique distinction of serving as the first woman Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir High Court as well as the Chief Justice of High Courts of two Union Territories – J&K and Ladakh. She has earned her degree in law from the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University and has had an illustrious legal practice before she was appointed a Judge of Delhi High Court in 2004. She was later elevated as the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. She was appointed Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir High Court in 2018. Justice Mittal spearheaded the Vulnerable Witness Court Project in the trial courts in Delhi leading to the establishment of the first such court room in India in 2012.

The hallmark of Justice Mittal’s judicial philosophy has been a combination of academic rigour, the need to make law and justice accessible to the masses and justice with a humane face.
